Jaguar is the luxury vehicle brand of Jaguar Land Rover and its headquarters are in Whitley, Coventry. Jaguar was founded by motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley in 1922 originally making motorcycle sidecars before developing bodies for passenger cars.
In 1990 Ford bought Jaguar Cars, then also buying Land Rover in 2000, in 2008 Ford sold both to Tata Motors. Tata created Jaguar Land Rover as a subsidiary holding company. At operating company level, in 2013 Jaguar Cars was merged with Land Rover to form Jaguar Land Rover Limited as the single design, manufacture, sales company and brand owner for both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
One of the best and most successful cars to come from Jaguar was the E Type, manufactured between 1961 and 1975. Its combination of beauty, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. The E-Type's claimed 150 mph top speed, sub-7-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration, unitary construction, disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and independent front and rear suspension distinguished the car and spurred industry-wide changes. The E-Type was based on Jaguar's D-Type racing car designed by William Heynes, which had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three consecutive years beginning 1955, and employed what was, for the early 1960s, a novel racing design principle, with a front subframe carrying the engine, front suspension and front bodywork bolted directly to the body tub. No ladder frame chassis, as was common at the time, was needed and as such the first cars weighed only 1315 kg.
